Could the acne medication Minocycline negatively affect my new tattoo?

Public Comments

  1. Ask the pharmacist they might know
  2. You shouldn't put anything on a new tattoo. I went to the beach, salt water the most natural of all things and my tattoo faded. don't do it.
  3. No it won't.
  4. Is your tatoo on your face or something? Anyway it shouldn't affect your tatoo, but why tempt fate. I mean tattoos are expensive and you just spent all that money to get it. Just dont put it directly on the tattoo site. just in case. here are the side effects for minocycline. ...... you should always know the side effects to every medicine you use. Cautions and side effects In addition to those common to the Tetracycline antibiotics group, minocycline may be used in renal impairment, but may aggrevate systemic lupus erythematosus.[1] Also, more so than other tetracyclines, minocycline can cause the rare condition of secondary intracranial hypertension which has initial symptoms of headache, visual disturbances, and confusion. Minocycline, like all Tetracyclines, becomes dangerous past its expiration date. While most prescription drugs lose potency after their expiration dates, tetracyclines are known to become toxic over time; expired tetracyclines can cause serious damage to the kidneys. Minocycline's absorption is impaired if taken at the same time of day as calcium or iron supplements. Unlike some of the other tetracycline group antibiotics, it can be taken with calcium rich foods such as milk, although this does reduce the absorption slightly (by ~5%).
  5. My husband and I own a tattoo and piercing studio. You didnt specify if it was recently done (a couple days) or new as it has been healed out for a long time. If it is a brand new tattoo and is still healing I would suggest you dont put anything than what your tattoo artist suggested. People dont understand that you must treat a new tattoo as if you have an open wound (which it is). If you cut your arm open would you use this medication? It is very important to keep it clean or you run the risk of infection or the tattoo losing ink. This medication affects the skin right? so, you will run the risk of it damaging your new tattoo. Me personally I would wait until it is completely healed if you really must use it. This will be about 6 weeks. Im sure your tattoo artist can also help you with this. Good Luck!
