Skin care at 20 --- what is the best way to promote HEALTHY SKIN AGING of the face and body?
I'm 20, and I've taken the first steps to better skin care by using a foundation (when I wear make-up) with an SPF of 19. I also cleanse my skin with Neutrogena products for acne prone skin, although I don't have acne anymore it keeps my skin under control. Is there anything else I can do NOW to prevent premature aging and wrinkles later on? What about anti-wrinkle creams, or other moisturizers? Any opinions on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

- Anti-aging Strategies *Wrinkles cannot be avoided. However, strong sunlight should be avoided which can cause premature aging. Skin that has been overexposed to sunlight becomes thickened, yellow and rough. *Too much sun also increases the risk of skin cancer. It has been estimated that having a bad sunburn increases the chances of getting skin cancer by twofold. Therefore, if you have to go out, use a sunscreen on exposed parts of your skin, not forgetting delicate areas like your lips and the tips of your ears. Reapply regularly. *Wear dark colored clothing with tight weaves because dark colors absorb sunlight and prevent it from reaching your skin. *Try to wear a cap to shade your scalp and face if exercising or going outdoors.
- Here are some tips on what you can do NOW: 1. Watch what you eat. Eat more vegetables and fruits. Lessen your intake of red meat and fried foods. Also, don't indulge in fast foods. 2. Drink plenty of water. If you can exceed eight glasses a day, the better. 3. Take vitamin C and E. 4. Use sunblock everyday. 5. If you don't have an oily skin type, moisturizers are good. If not, apply them at night before you go to bed. 6. Don't lie with your face or the side of your face on the pillow. Doing this causes wrinkles to form. Imagine a tissue paper pressed against the pillow. Creases will form on the tissue. This is similar to what happens on your face. 7. Don't overuse skin care products. My cousin did this and her skin became very dry and looked like that of a 50 year old even though she's only 21. Remember that everything should be in moderation. And, don't use ultimately cheap products. They might just harm your skin. Always check with your dermatologist for the products you want to use. 8. When taking a bath, put your face under the shower for about 3 to 5 minutes. Aside from hydrating your face, this also serves as a facial massage. 9. Always remove your make up before you go to bed. 10. Exfoliate once a week. This will remove dead skin cells and reveal the good layer of your skin. 11. Adopt a positive outlook in life. Believe it or not, optimism contributes a lot to preventing pre-mature aging. When you are always jolly/happy, you and other people will see that you're radiant and beaming in beauty.
- The best thing you can possibly do is read the information contained at www.romancing-the-soap.com It's written by a medical practitioner. She'll tell you what works and what doesn't (if you use the Contact Me form). Never had to wait long for an answer. All the info. is absolutely accurate, up-to-date, and the author strikes me as a real consumer advocate. I've subscribed to the newsletter, the only newsletter I receive, but it's such a superb site! I'm sure you'll be VERY pleasantly surprised and you'll learn a lot of FACTS.
- Cleanse your face AM &PM Exfoliate 2x per week Use a toner AM&PM Mask 2x week Moisturize AM&PM If you want you may add an eye cream and any other specialize treatment to combat age signs Have a good balanced diet and drink plenty of water
- Keep your skin hydrated, avoid long periods in the sun and/or use a good SPF, and avoid products that contain mineral oil. One great way to keep your skin healthy is to keep it hydrated. This means applying a moisturizer, preferably one with an SPF. Research has shown that an SPF higher then 8 is too harsh for the skin on a daily basis. However, if you plan to be out in the sun for a long period of time, of course apply a higher SPF. You'll want to stay away from products that contain mineral oil as the molecular structure is too large for the pores of your skin, just coating the top layer and getting wiped off over time, giving you little to no benefit. Mineral oil is actually the #2 cause of aging with the sun being #1. If you have any questions or would like to learn anything further, I would be happy to help you.
